Holiday Itinerary

On our outward journey we take a break in Ely, a small city full of charm and beauty, and home to its magnificent cathedral known as the “Ship of the Fens”.

Today we enjoy the benefit of a Blue Badge Guide for our visit to Constable Country calling at East Bergholt, an unspoilt village and birthplace of the famous painter. We see the church at Dedham and the little hamlet of Flatford Mill, before continuing through beautiful Suffolk villages, including Lavenham, one of Britain’s best preserved villages.

We spend the morning in the historic town of Colchester. Its title as Britain’s oldest recoded town is evident as you wander through the old narrow streets.  In the afternoon we visit Beth Chatto Gardens. This inspiring garden has been transformed from an overgrown wasteland into an informal garden harmonising with the surrounding countryside.

A scenic day as we journey through the chocolate box villages of the region to the idyllic village of Finchingfield, complete with village green and pond, redbrick cottages and a windmill. We take a break here, before continuing to Long Melford, one of Suffolk’s most attractive villages with a long high street populated by charming shops, galleries, cafes and typical Suffolk inns.  Time to obtain lunch (at own expense), before our afternoon visit to Melford Hall, where you will discover stories of the Hyde Parker family, from naval exploits to visits from their cousin Beatrix Potter, which make this house so fascinating.

On our homeward journey we have time to visit the picturesque market town of Bury St Edmunds, with its fascinating Abbey ruins and great shopping.
