Holiday Itinerary

THURSDAY On our outward journey we take a break in Ely, a small city full of charm and beauty, and home to its magnificent cathedral known as the “Ship of the Fens”.

FRIDAY Today we enjoy the benefit of a Blue Badge Guide for our visit to Constable Country calling at East Bergholt, an unspoilt village and birthplace of the famous painter. We see the church at Dedham and the little hamlet of Flatford Mill, before continuing through beautiful Suffolk villages, including Lavenham, one of  Britain's best preserved villages.

SATURDAY We spend the morning in the historic town of Colchester. Its title as Britain's oldest recorded town is evident as you wander through the old narrow streets. In the afternoon we visit Beth Chatto Gardens. This inspiring garden has been transformed from an overgrown wasteland into an informal garden harmonising with the surrounding countryside.

SUNDAY A scenic day as we journey through the chocolate box villages of the region to the idyllic village of Finchingfield, complete with village green and pond, redbrick cottages and a windmill. We take a break here, before continuing to Audley End House and Gardens. Explore this decadent Jacobean mansion house, enjoy stunning views across the unspoilt Essex countryside, and wander the tranquil gardens created by “Capability” Brown.

MONDAY On our homeward journey we have time to visit the picturesque market town of Bury St Edmunds, with its fascinating Abbey ruins and great shopping.
