Three nights dinner bed & breakfast
Situated in the heart of the Ruhr valley, in a peaceful location next to Gelsenkirchen’s Stadtgarten central park. All cosy bedrooms have balconies, safe and minibar, and offer views over the town. FRIDAY Travel to Dover for the early afternoon ferry to Calais, continuing to Altstadt for our three night stay.
SATURDAY We board the famous “Schwebebahn (Floating Railway) in Wuppertal, for an amazing journey winding between the town’s rooftops on a track that follows the Wupper River. We ride in the historic Kaiserwagen, the personal carriage of the eccentric Kaiser Wilhelm II, who famously travelled the line, before it was opened to the general public. We continue to Dortmund, which boasts one of the biggest Christmas markets in Germany, with over 300 stalls encircling a gigantic 45 meter tall Christmas tree creation, reputed to be the biggest in the world. Enjoy the local delicacies as you browse the stalls.
SUNDAY Today we visit Düsseldorf and its wondrous Christmas market, with gingerbread houses, outdoor ice rink, art and craft huts, and Sternchenmarkt, (Little Star Market) with its own illumination, crystals that create a mesmerising winter landscape. Or take a walk along the world-famous Königsallee, where a thousand brilliant lights illuminate the giant chestnut trees lining the boulevard.
MONDAY We bid farewell to Germany and journey back to Calais for our afternoon crossing to Dover, arriving home late evening.
