MONDAY We make our way north, and over the border into Scotland.
TUESDAY A morning at leisure to explore Gretna Green, when you may wish to visit the famous Blacksmith Shop Museum to discover the history, and experience the magic of Anvil weddings. (Small admission cost) In the afternoon we visit the remarkable Devil’s Porridge Museum commemorating HM Factory Gretna, the greatest munitions factory in the world during the First World War. The museum uses artefacts, information panels, film and audio, photographs and personal accounts to bring the fascinating history of the Border area to life.
WEDNESDAY A day in Keswick and the Northern Lakes. We travel alongside Ullswater to Keswick, capital of the Northern Lakes, for some time at leisure, returning to the hotel via Bassenthwaite.
THURSDAY Today’s excursion takes us past Sweetheart Abbey and along the coast with views over the Solway Firth, before arriving in the picturesque harbour town of Kirkcudbright, with its colourful blend of medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings and home to some lovely artists’ galleries and studios. Following time to explore, we then visit Threave Garden. Discover a beautifully landscaped garden for all seasons, and a haven for wildlife. Take a stroll through the secret garden, rockery and walled garden, or admire the stunning views over the Galloway Hills.
